Don't Risk Punishment

Positive reinforcement training

We believe in training to build and nurture the human canine bond, to teach cooperation, understanding, communication, good manners and companionship between two different, distinct and yet very similar species. With this in mind we want to have people understand that reinforcing behaviours is how they will get this companionship with their pet dog. This is why we avoid using punishment as a part of our training program.

It is not that punishment doesn’t work, because it definitely can work, however there are a few not well known facts about punishment that make it undesirable as a learning tool:

 Punishment can lead to avoidance of the person by the dog due to fear of the person.

 Aggression/retaliation may result as a defence mechanism or from frustration and may be against someone other than the punisher, which is very dangerous.

 Punishment doesn’t teach what to do, only what not to do.

Through our chosen preference for teaching of reinforcing behaviours, your dog will be a willing, enthusiastic learner, who enjoys training/working with the handler. Learning will be fun for both the human and the canine and the learned behaviours will be solid, proofed for the long term.
